MOMENTS OF 1985
Like every year, this one had its ups and downs. For motor-boat driver Enrico Vidoli of Italy, Sept. 15 was a definite down. He and his 550-hp catamaran were charging along at 140 mph in a Grand Prix race in Lyon, France when the boat suddenly went airborne, catapulting its driver into the Rhone. Miraculously, Vidoli was bruised but not broken.

Heysel Stadium, Brussels: Rampaging British fans turned a soccer match with Italy into a bloody battle that killed 38.
MILESTONES
Six for the record book (clockwise, from right): Phil Niekro, 46, pitched his 300th win; Rod Carew hammered his 3,000th hit; Britain's Steve Cram lowered the mile mark to 3:46.31; Tom Seaver got a terrific hug from his father-in-law after victory No. 300; Pete Rose singled for his 4,192nd hit, topping Ty Cobb; Grambling's Eddie Robinson won his 324th game to become college football's winningest coach.
