A Month of Crowns and Thorns

June was magic for the Los Angeles Lakers, who, under the wizardry of Magic Johnson, disposed of the defending champion Boston Celtics in six games for the NBA title.

Scott Simpson beat Tom Watson by a stroke to win the U.S. Open at San Francisco's Olympic Club, and Bet Twice galloped off with the Belmont Stakes, denying Alysheba the Triple Crown. Presaging the future, Steffi Graf, 17, beat Martina Navratilova to become the youngest woman ever to win a French Open. Reprising the past, Gerry Cooney, 30, tried to make a comeback, against Michael Spinks, and was knocked out in the fifth.
