CONSIDER THISboxes compiled by Baseball Prospectus (www.baseballprospectus.com) writers JoeSheehan (AL) and Nate Silver (NL). In some boxes there is a reference to thePECOTA system, which is a Baseball Prospectus prediction model that projects aplayer's numbers based on the performances of up to 100 statisticallycomparable players.
PLAYER VALUERANKINGS SI's David Sabino ranked the position players in the major leaguesfrom 1 (the best) to 450 and the pitchers from 1 to 350, based on projectionsof their statistical production this season. The categories considered forposition players were batting average, home runs, RBIs and stolen bases; forpitchers the categories were wins, saves, ERA and WHIP (walks plus hits perinning pitched). Sabino also took into account each player's career stats aswell as his role on his team, his prospects for improving or declining and hisinjury history and physical condition. Using these criteria, SI determined eachplayer's value ranking, which appears next to his name in his team's projectedlineup in the following scouting reports.
