The Beat

RED WINGS defenseman Chris Chelios, 46, summers in Malibu Beach, Calif., enduring punishing workouts and the needling of his pals in the self-dubbed Malibu Mob, a group of celebrities and athletes that includes John Cusack, Tony Danza, Laird Hamilton and John McEnroe. "He's the oldest man in the world," Cusack, 42, says of the NHL's elder statesman. "He's actually 792." Chelly brought the Mob to Detroit last week to meet the Stanley Cup and play in a golf tournament.... SI Swimsuit cover model Marisa Miller (right) got the cold shoulder last week—on camera at least. She filmed a 30-second spot for the NFL in which she sits next to a football-crazed schlub who's too absorbed in to notice her. "My life has changed since I was on the cover," Miller says. "I'm hoping to get more into sports. I'd love to be a sportscaster." ... It was no surprise to see pitcher Brad Penny canoodling with actress Eliza Dushku (Bring It On) at a Dodgers bowling event last week—they're a couple. But outfielder Matt Kemp hobnobbing with Larry King? "He comes to the games, and we've become friends," says Kemp. "L.A. is a different world. You never know what'll happen."
