CLUTCH THROW Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers got rid of the ball despite being in the grip of two Packers defenders during the fourth quarter of the teams' high-scoring showdown in San Diego on Sunday. Rivers was 26 of 46 for 385 yards and four touchdowns, but the Chargers lost 45--38.

CAN'T-MISS MISS My Miss Aurelia (9) stalked pace setter Candrea (2) going into the first turn at Churchill Downs during the Juvenile Fillies at the Breeders' Cup (page 36) last Friday. My Miss Aurelia took the lead nearing the 5/16 pole and cruised to victory, capping an undefeated 2-year-old season.

EARNING HIS STRIPES NHL linesman Derek Nansen (70) was caught in a melee in St. Paul last Saturday when Wild center Kyle Brodziak (21) was pulled headfirst to the ice by Blues defenseman Roman Polak, who was being held by Minnesota defenseman Marek Zidlicky (3). The Wild won 2--1.
