Every Tuesday for the past month, Wisconsin-Whitewater basketball coach Pat Miller had lunch with Whitewater's football coach, Lance Leipold. In December, Leipold had led the Warhawks to the D-III national title, and as the men ate, Miller would pepper his colleague with questions about everything from motivation to travel schedules.
"I learned so much during those lunches," says Miller. "The coaches here, just like the players in different sports, really push each other."
That was evident last Saturday, when the Whitewater basketball team beat Cabrini College 63--60 to win the national championship in Salem, Va. Down 18 points in the second half, the Warhawks rallied behind senior forward Chris Davis (above), the tournament MOP. What was the key? "Our work ethic, and that comes from our players seeing other athletes at our school be successful on a national level," says Miller. Whitewater is the only school in D-III history to claim basketball and football national titles in the same school year, a feat accomplished only once before—by Florida in 2006—across all divisions.
