SUDDEN DEATH, SUDDEN LIFE On the brink of a 2--0 series deficit last Saturday in Boston after blowing a 1--0 third-period lead, the Capitals took a great leap forward when Nicklas Backstrom (19, against glass, beneath Alex Ovechkin, 8) scored in the second OT to give Washington a 2--1 win, just one of several stunning first-round developments last weekend (page 38).

DOGGED CATCHER The Yankees' Russell Martin went all-in on this sixth-inning foul pop by Albert Pujols in New York's home opener last Friday against the Angels. Martin did not pull in the ball, but Pujols struck out, and the Yanks went on to win 5--0.

A DAY TO REMEMBER Call it Student Body Light: Five-year-old McClain Blackmon juked USC punter Kyle Negrete during halftime of the Trojans' spring game last Saturday (page 65). McClain, who has hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare blood disorder, attended the game through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The date on Negrete's arm marks the day his mother died of breast cancer.
