BIG 12

Spring Notes

OKLAHOMA MAY BE a preseason playoff favorite, but it needs to solidify its wide receiving corps. Junior JORDAN SMALLWOOD and senior Dede Westbrook should be top contributors while sophomores Dahu Green and tight end Mark Andrews showed signs of breaking out this spring.... Texas landed a stellar recruiting class, and quarterback Shane Buechele is gunning for the starting job. He finished the spring game 22 of 41 for 299 yards and two touchdowns and looked better than senior Tyrone Swoopes, although sophomore Jerrod Heard sat with a right-shoulder injury.... TCU will have to choose between sophomores Kenny Hill and Foster Sawyer at QB. Hill showed flashes in his 12 games at Texas A&M, while Sawyer struggled last season. In the injury-depleted secondary, corners Jeff Gladney, a freshman, and converted receiver Tony James, a sophomore, have shown promise.... West Virginia fans are hoping for an improvement from senior quarterback Skyler Howard, who completed 18 of 26 passes, with three TDs in the spring game, one of them to junior receiver Shelton Gibson. In another positive, the defense had a pair of pick-sixes.
