Spring Notes

MICHIGAN STATE ENTERED the spring with uncertainty at quarterback, but TYLER O'CONNOR appears to have won the job. The senior, who engineered a stunning three-point win at Ohio State last November, outplayed junior Damion Terry this April.... Don't expect Ohio State's running game to decline this season. Besides senior Bri'onte Dunn, the Buckeyes have the 5'10", 215-pound freshman Mike Weber, who scored two touchdowns in the spring game and drew comparisons with alum Carlos Hyde.... Penn State's new offensive coordinator, Joe Moorhead, got positive reviews for his up-tempo, spread system. Sophomore Trace McSorley completed 23 of 27 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns in the spring game, though coach James Franklin has yet to commit to McSorley over freshman Tommy Stevens.... Illinois found a new coach this spring in NFL vet Lovie Smith, but it lost a top weapon in Mike Dudek. The sophomore wide receiver will miss the season after tearing his right ACL, the same injury that sidelined him last year, after he caught 76 passes for 1,038 yards and six touchdowns in 2014.
