Spring Notes

STANFORD'S RACE TO replace Kevin Hogan at quarterback will carry over into the fall after junior Keller Chryst and senior Ryan Burns played to a draw in spring practice.... Don't assume Oregon will replace QB Vernon Adams Jr. with another FCS transfer in Dakota Prukop. The senior from Montana State may win the job, but freshman Travis Jonsen is putting up a strong fight. Meanwhile new coordinator Brady Hoke is making the defense more aggressive.... Washington is poised to vie for the Pac-12 North behind sophomore quarterback Jake Browning and sophomore running back MYLES GASKIN. The offense will get a boost from speedy junior receiver John Ross, who missed last season with a right-knee injury.... USC frosh quarterback Sam Darnold is challenging junior Max Browne for the right to succeed Cody Kessler. On defense the Trojans have already lost senior linebacker Scott Felix, who tested positive for a banned substance, and junior DT Kenny Bigelow to a torn right ACL.... UCLA ran more 4--3 defense this spring, and the reconfigured front thrived. Unfortunately it also exposed the O-line—which has new starters at center and both guard spots—particularly in pass protection.
