GRETA WILKER, a senior and four-sport athlete at Belding (Mich.) High, is set to graduate No. 1 in her class with a 4.2 GPA and 16 varsity letters—four each in volleyball, basketball, softball and track and field. But arguably the most impressive number on her résumé is four: the number of dogs she has trained for Paws With A Cause, a national organization that provides assistance dogs for people with disabilities. This spring, when she isn't sprinting between softball games and the throwing circle, Greta is training Porsche, a 7-month-old golden retriever. Giving up a furry friend after training is complete is never easy, but when her dogs get their assignments, it's all worth it. "That's a moment where you realize your dog is doing something bigger than any normal pet, and you helped them," says Greta, who will play softball at Emory next year. "There's immense pride."
