ARTIST'S TOUCH

Author:

MANU GINÓBILI announced his retirement after a 16-year career with the Spurs that was highlighted by four NBA titles, two All-Star berths, a team-record 1,495 three-pointers and too many Eurosteps to count. Greg Nelson photographed him beginning in 2002, when the native of Argentina came to the NBA. "Manu was a player with such great improvisational skills that it was hard to predict what he was going to do, which is a real challenge for a sports photographer," says Nelson. "When you nailed a shot of him, it was the type of basketball image you don't often see. His game seemed to be played as much horizontal as vertical—arms and legs going in all different directions while displaying contorted facial expressions. He was a player who actually did leave it all on the floor."
