Sister Madonna Buder first made FACES IN THE CROWD in our May 17, 1982 issue; she finished five marathons that year, just three years after taking up running ... at age 48. Four years later she began competing in triathlon, and in the March 8, 1993 issue, Buder was chosen as a FACE again for surpassing her own Ironman records in the 60-to-64 age group. Twenty-five years later Buder, an 88-year-old Catholic nun from Spokane, is still swimming and biking and running—and still setting standards. At the USA Triathlon national championships in Cleveland last month she won the 85+ age group in 1:48.06. Nicknamed the Iron Nun, Buder has competed in more than 325 triathlons and is a five-time age-group world champ.
