NEW SHORT CUT
Bermuda shorts are going west. Once exclusive with Eastern college students, walking shorts last year began to appear on campuses in the South and Midwest and this fall are moving in on Levi territory. And, for the first time, there is a new crop of college fashions to go with the shorts. These include above-knee-length skirts (next page), measured like a kilt (two inches from the ground in kneeling position); finger-tip-length jackets and coats which leave a generous edge of shorts in view; fancy knee socks and warm knitted drawers in show-off colors to wear underneath the new short skirts.
CLOISTERED COEDS AT CORNELL SHOW OFF NEW HIP-LENGTH JACKETS OF RED WOOL, IRISH BAUNEEN AND SHEEPSKIN
At a punch party on Sunday, Cornell students wear corduroy jackets, walking skirt.
To prepare this preview of college fashions, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED obtained the happy cooperation of summer students at Cornell. These Bermuda shorts, skirts, short coats, now in college shops across the country, mark the biggest change in casual campus garb since blue jeans came out of the West.
For men, the shorter look is seen in the finger-tip, all-weather campus coat. The coat at left has raglan shoulders, is of gabardine, sports leather buttons, plaid lining. Hooded version (center) of poplin has alpaca and red flannel lining, dog-leash snaps. Orion fleece-lined belted safari jacket (right) has Pima cotton outer shell.
Cornell crimson pops up in unexpected places on a picnic—in men's garters rigging up a coed's socks, in a man's felt belt. Corduroy shorts have a leather back strap, pocket trim.
Taken from the Scots—a pleated kilt which winds around matching plaid walking shorts. Scottish tassels trim leather-footed socks; jersey blouse is copy of traditional Scots sweater.
Students picnic on the rocks at Fall Creek Gorge, several waterfalls above Lake Cayuga, in look-alike outfits of shirts and shorts.
