A digest of last-minute reports from fishermen and other unreliable sources

KEY TO SYMBOLS

FG=fishing good; FF=fishing fair; FP=fishing poor. OG=outlook good; OP=outlook poor.

STEELHEAD TROUT: CALIFORNIA: New runs are in all coastal streams from Monterey to Klamath; best bets are Eel, South Fork of Eel, Garcia, Noyo and Gualala.

OREGON: Rain is needed to move new run up river; OF. Minestucca is low, clear but inactive; should be hot if water warms a bit. Siuslaw ditto.

WASHINGTON: Puyallup River producing lots of steelhead in 10-pound class. Green River clear, FG, OG. Olympic Peninsula rivers now fishing well with Quinault, Humptulips and Queets good bets.

BRITISH COLUMBIA: Cold weather has most rivers in good shape; try the Coquihalla or the Vedder. On Vancouver Island the Cowichan, Chemainus and Puntledge are producing well, and OG.

SAILFISH: FLORIDA: Big concentration of sails continues from Fort Pierce to the Keys; OG through next week.

MEXICO: With blue water in close at Acapulco charter boats are averaging seven or eight strikes and three or four fish hooked; one marlin boated last week.

BLACK BASS: FLORIDA: Despite cold weather try sinking a live shiner deep in Lake Hatchineha, east of Dundee, or Kissimmee River south of the Lake Wales-Vero Beach highway bridge.

LOUISIANA: Deep-running plugs taking in Old River, Saline Bayou and in Big Bayou.

CALIFORNIA: Things are picking up at Havasu and Mohave lakes, and below Parker Dam, but most action comes at midday and big bass are in deep water.

BONEFISH: FLORIDA: Bones are in good numbers on Norris Cut flats; spin-fishermen getting fair action on artificials; OG next week.

BAHAMAS: Flycaster Fred Lippincott of Radnor, Pa. still has sore arm after taking 11 bones to 6½ pounds at Andros Island last week.

CHANNEL BASS: LOUISIANA: FG in most deep passes leading into Gulf of Mexico and around offshore oil rigs.

FLORIDA: Reds have moved far up northwest.

FLORIDA RIVERS: St. Marks, Aucilla, Ochlockonee and New rivers are producing. Myakka River south of Sarasota reports redfish abundant and hungry.

STRIPED BASS: CALIFORNIA: Chester Meeks of Richmond, Calif. took a 53-pound striper from Broad Slough near Antioch last week. With Bay and Delta waters colder, fish are finicky.

OREGON: Isthmus Slough in Coos Bay slowed down last week but lunkers are there and will play ball if rain warms water; best bait pilchard.
