ANNIVERSARY
Leslie MacMitchell caught up with the only major mile title which had evaded him nine years ago this week during the National A.A.U. track and field championships at Madison Square Garden. Unofficial king of the mile, Les won the event by two yards over Tommy Quinn in 4:18.1. The triumph was a vindication, for Les had lost the same event to Gil Dodds in his otherwise all-winning 1942 campaign.
