BROOKLYN DODGERS
THE PITCHERS
36 DON NEWCOMBE
Throws R, bats L. Rec. 26-6. ERA 2.95. The winningest pitcher in majors. Will overpower batter with fast ball, fool him with sharp, down-breaking slider, changeup or slow curve. Control razor-sharp. Dangerous at plate, hits with real power. Looking for first Series win (now 0-3).
35 SAL MAGLIE
Throws R, bats R. Rec. 11-5. ERA 3.07. Old (39) Sal is comeback pitcher of the year; his work in stretch drive was vital to Dodgers. Along with excellent control and knowledge of hitters, has perhaps the best curve ball in league. Tireless, and a great competitor.
41 CLEM LABINE
Throws R, bats R. Rec. 9-6. ERA 3.38. Has appeared in seven of last 13 Dodger World Series games and might easily become Series' most familiar sight stalking in from bullpen. Has all requirements of good reliever: poise, control and pitches (curve and sinker) which break down.
THE HITTERS
1 PEE WEE REESE, SS
Bats R, throws R. .260 avg. 9 HR. At 37, still a marvel of consistent skill; nearly flawless afield, remarkable base runner. Shrewd hitter who can hurt you with his power on high fast ball. Can hit-and-run, bunt for hit, sacrifice, squeeze. Curve him and change up.
19 JIM GILLIAM, 2B-LF
Bats R-L, throws R., .302 avg. 6 HR. Insiders' choice for most valuable Dodger of year. Switch hitter, hits curve well; set him up with curve outside and change, then come in with fast ball. A topflight base runner and a sometimes brilliant infielder. Only fair in outfield.
39 ROY CAMPANELLA, C
Bats R, throws R. .216 avg. 18 HR. Despite sore thumb and typical every-other-year slump, still a pull hitter with great power. Death on high fast balls; pitch him curve outside, move ball around. Very quick behind plate, sure receiver, good arm. Knows Yankee hitters.
4 DUKE SNIDER, CF
Bats L, throws R. .287 avg. 39 HR. Strikes out a lot but can hit almost anything over the fence. Likes low fast ball best, but can hit high outside pitch with power to left. Pitch him high, tight; curve low and away. Great fielder with strong arm; fast on the bases.
6 CARL FURILLO, RF
Bats R, throws R. .296 avg. 20 HR. Won a lot of games for Dodgers with clutch hits. Likes fast balls but will smack curve outside for extra bases to right. Curve him low and inside. In the field appears to have slowed down a little but still has one of best throwing arms in the game.
15 SANDY AMOROS, LF
Bats L, throws L. .258 avg. 13 HR. Despite low average, a dangerous hitter with real power for his size. Very good fast-ball hitter; pitch him breaking stuff inside, an occasional curve low and away. Not an outstanding fielder; although fast and quick, not a dangerous base runner.
42 JACKIE ROBINSON, 3B
Bats R, throws R. .277 avg. 9 HR. Part-time player in early season but real mainstay in stretch run; great in clutch. Likes breaking stuff, so pitch him fast and tight. Bunts like an artist; watch out for squeeze. Greatest base runner in baseball; terrorizes pitchers.
14 GIL HODGES, 1B
Bats R, throws R. .258 avg. 30 HR. This wasn't his best year but he can still break up the ball game. Good fast-ball hitter with real power, but very weak on breaking stuff; curve him low and outside. Good bunter, runs bases well, a genius with the glove around first.
2 RANDY JACKSON, 3B
Bats R, throws R. .275 avg. 8 HR. After fast start, freak midseason accident cost him chance to remain Dodger regular. Now fills in for Robinson, pinch-hits. A good infielder with power. Likes first pitch, above-average curve-ball hitter. Pitch him tight, move ball around.
BOARD OF STRATEGY AND RESERVES
WALTER ALSTON, MGR.
24 Alston has done a remarkable job with his aging, slumping team, although he gives much credit to 33 JOE BECKER, pitching coach, for mound staff's surprising effectiveness. 22 BILLY HERMAN at third and 31 JAKE PITLER at first are exceptional baseline coaches.
The Brooklyn bench runs to Speed and defense, leaves hitting to regulars for most part, with the exception of 8 DALE MITCHELL (L). 3 CHICO FERNANDEZ (R), SS, 43 CHARLIE NEAL (R), 2b, and 9 GINO CIMOLI (R), of, are slick glove men, fast on bases. 10 AL WALKER (L) and 54 DIXIE HOWELL (R) are slow-footed but reliable relief for Campanella. Likely starting pitchers are 17 CARL ERSKINE (R), bothered by sore arm, 40 ROGER CRAIG (R) and 53 DON DRYSDALE (R). 46 DON BESSENT has Superior fast ball, is No. 2 reliever. Other pitchers are 32 SANDY KOUFAX (L), 16 KEN LEHMAN (L), 37 ED ROEBUCK (R).
