VIVE LE SPORT

Rousseau's quaintly mustachioed soccer players

Henri Rousseau, le douanier, was a quiet little French toll collector with a burning desire to be a great artist. Among his best works is this of soccer football, done in 1908, a happy blending of the real-life world around him and the lovely world of fantasy that filled his mind's eye. Unsung during his life, his work is now treasured in many of the world's finest museums and private collections.
