RING IN THE NEW
The sporting world blossomed out with new concepts, new products and new candidates for honors as 1957 began to pour forth its largesse. A sampler of the week's widely varied contributions to sport is shown on these pages
Caliente open provided plungers with new wrinkle—a morning line in golf for the masses. Here crowd clusters about the huge odds board ready to wager. Ed Furgol, a 12-1 shot, won.
Pre-ski set had new delight—Sno-Skeeters which fit any size of foot and provide for simple skiing. Victoria Hecht, 3, of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., tries them out here on a New York slope.
Hibiscus stakes at Hialeah was the season's debut for many of the East's top 3-year-olds, whose birthdays, by fiat, fall on January 1. Gallant Man (directly in front of quarter pole) was well back in the pack as the field straightened out for the homestretch, but the bay colt, under Jockey John Choquette's urging, swung outside and ran down the leaders in the stretch for fourth straight win and national respect. Missile (No. 9) finished second, a half length back. King Hairan (No. 3) was third.
Boat show, consisting of a record 357 exhibits of manufacturers and distributors, sprawled over more than seven acres on four floors of the New York Coliseum. The show introduced numerous advances in design, power and accessories, none of which was more striking than the elevated model above who delightfully revolved with Johnson's new 35-hp outboard motor.
