•EAST

Stowe, Vt.: Four inches of new powder turned all trails to good-excellent, but temperatures down near 50 below kept crowds thin. TD 38, BD 32. CR 1,500, SN 4-6.

Big Bromley, Vt.: Extreme cold kept crowds down, wait at lift seven minutes. Metal skis and knickers with Norwegian heavy wool socks popular. TD 8-30, BD 8-24, CR 3,300, SN 88.

Mt. Snow, Vt.: Skiing good to excellent with four inches of new powder. Stretch pants in bright and pastel colors blooming all over mountain. TD 63, BD 26-30, CR 2,000, SN 13.

Mt. Cranmore, N.H.: All lifts running. Annual Gibson Trophy race scheduled Feb. 3. TD 16-25, BD 16-25, CR 8,500, SN 12.

Mt. Tremblant, Que.: Skiing excellent on Tower and Standard, with Ryan's Run, Taschereau closed. All lifts operating. TD 11 36, BD 6-27, CR 1,000, SN 3.

Snow Ridge, N.Y.: Snow conditions perfect for racing and recreational skiing. Bill Woods, national combined champ, won N.Y. State alpine championship over the weekend, nosing out Tom Corcoran, who won downhill race. TD 25, BD 10, CR 3,000, SN 16.

Bousquets, Mass.: Skiing excellent on artificial snow, where necessary. Family groups seem attracted here. Many Rossignol skis evident with heavy emphasis on safety bindings. TD 14-26, BD 14-26, CR 3,000, SN 12.

•FAR WEST

Squaw Valley, Calif.: Best skiing of season. All trails open with packed powder. Flying Saucer slopes excellent. Patterned ski sweaters popular. TD 72-84, BD 36, CR 1,250, SN 34.

Mount Baker, Wash.: Fine moonlight skiing, especially on Shuksan Arm. Heather trail has best deep powder; Austin packed. Pacific Northwest championships due Feb. 2-3. TD 120, BD 135, CR 2.300, SN 6.

Grouse Mt., B.C.: Club championships won by Don French and Carolyn Dodds. New tow in Blueberry Bowl opened. Excellent powder snow. TD 90-108, BD 70-80, Blueberry 70-108, CR 3.500, SN 0.

Snoqualmie Pass, Wash.: New powder brought out a huge crowd last weekend but zero temperatures kept traffic light to top of Thunder-bird Mountain. Metal ski still popular but a marked swing back to wood. TD 45-50, BD 39-40, CR 4,500, SN 3-4.

Sugar Bowl, Calif.: Excellent skiing on all trails. Giant slalom championship scheduled Jan. 26. TD 72-96. BD 60-72, CR 1,400, SN 24.

Mt. Hood, Ore.: Wet snow. All facilities operating. TD 88, BD 80, CR 1,200, SN 15.

•WEST

Sun Valley, Idaho: Baldy, Christmas Bowl, excellent. Attenhofer metal skis favored in dark and powder blue. Mount Baldy TD 34, Valley Floor 14, CR 800. SN 24.

Santa Fe, N. Mex.: Beginners' area and trails good but crowded. Twenty minute wait on chair. TD 20-30, BD 16-20, CR 1,000, SN 0.

Hidden Valley, Colo.: Lower tow and trails closed. Upper tow packed, conditions good. TD 43, BD 8, CR 500, SN 9.

Alta, Utah: Skiing never better, new powder snow and sunshine nearly every day. TD 59, BD 59, CR 1,500, SN 13.

•MIDWEST

Caberfae, Mich.: CUSSA Cross Country Championship to be Jan. 27. Bull Nose and Bowl excellent, all areas in operation. TD 2-4, BD 6-8, CR 3,771, SN 5.

Terry Peak, S. Dak.: Junior training program well attended. TD 40-44, BD 38-50, CR 750, SN 16.

Rib Mt., Wis.: Best skiing on open slopes. High School downhill and slalom meet scheduled. Feb. 9. TD 4, BD 4, CR 1,000, SN 1.
