STEELHEAD:WASHINGTON: Long-awaited thaw moving frisky new runs up rivers from salt water.Steelies rolling and jumping, rivers rising colored with snow melt and lightrains, but setback in store if rain continues. Nooksack River's top drift MountBaker schoolhouse at Deming, where anglers are hauling them out up to 20 poundson red bead and fluorescent yarn. Skagit almost ice-free, with drifters hittingfrom Lyman on downstream. Toutle, Cowlitz, Kalama. Puyallup. Nisqually, upperreaches of Yakima, confluence of Naches, Humptulips good bets. OREGON: FG withwarmer weather. Sandy and Clackamas rivers best bets. Coastal streams H and Rbut falling. OG.
BRITISH COLUMBIA:Cold still holds streams L and C, with several iced up, but falling glass,south winds have warmed things. FF to G on Quinsam, Big Qualicum, Cowichan. FFon Vedder. Little Campbell tops. OG if thaw is slow.
PACIFIC SALMON:CALIFORNIA: Chinooks averaging 15 pounds being taken on Sacramento betweenRedding and Los Molinos.
BRITISH COLUMBIA:Springs to 25 pounds being boated off Cape Mudge. FG at Pender Harbor;Horseshoe Bay fair, but dogfish in. OF/G.
WASHINGTON:Blackmouth biting at East Sound and Obstruction Pass. Good-sized springs alsorunning off San Juan Island. FG/OG in Puget Sound, with catches to 14 notuncommon.
BONEFISH:BAHAMAS: FG as fish running in hungry schools. Week's largest in Bahamas'tournament 10-pound, 12-ouncer taken off Andros by N. T. Balling, Farmington,Pa.
FLORIDA: Key Westagent reports plenitude of bones on flats. Frew Morton. San Francisco, caught10-pounder on eight-pound spinning tackle in 15 minutes off Key Largo.
TARPON: FLORIPA:FVG/OVG as tarpon are rolling ahead of schedule throughout Keys, due to longspell of warm weather. Robert W. Goetz, Monroe, Wisconsin, fishing out of WhaleHarbor on Upper Keys, landed 61-pounder after hour and a half on eight-poundspinning gear.
WALLEYED PIKE:TENNESSEE: Benny Bryant, Spencer, missed world's record by one pound when hecaught 21-pounder in headwaters of Center Hill at Webb Camp Dock.
BLACK BASS:LOUISIANA: FG in currently fertile Black Lake and Saline Lake near Winnfieldwith largemouths topping six pounds. OF/G.
CALIFORNIA:Between blustering winds Lower Colordado Lakes coughing up largemouths to ninepounds. Fish closer to top. indicating rising WT, season's peak before Easter;OVG.
SOUTH CAROLINA:All reservoirs rising and OG if balmy weather persists. Eighty-degreetemperature lured fish to shallow water where artificial redworm snagged manylimits.
WEAKFISH:LOUISIANA: Speckles have been stirring around Lake Pontchartrain withtemperatures in low 80s. Trollers working railroad trestle doing dandy. OuterIslands in neighborhood of Battledore Reef off Pointe a la Hache have been siteof large catches.
STRIPED BASS:VIRGINIA: Fishing best since early December. Deep trolling fine on Potomac outof Cole's Point and on York River out of Yorktown. Little Wicomico suitinglight tackle buffs trolling for three-to-five pounders while Piankatankproducing stripers up to 10 pounds.
CALIFORNIA:Frank's Tract still finest spot on Delta despite some chill. But San Joaquin atAntioch Bridge, Sacramento above Towers, and Napa River all producing aswell.
