...THESE FACES IN THE CROWD...

Stan Musial, genial slugger who came out of Donora, Pa. in 1941 to join St. Louis and earn a reputation as one of baseball's "nice guys," played 823rd consecutive game since 1952 against Philadelphia for new National League endurance record, modestly shrugged off feat: "I just played a lot of baseball."

Derek Ibbotson, 24, British electrical engineer who first cracked four-minute barrier last August, celebrated birth of first child (a daughter) by stepping off 3:58.4 mile, second only to John Landy's 3:58, at Glasgow. Ibbotson was sure he could have beaten Landy's time "if I had a pacemaker."

Meriam Bailey, free-swinging 19-year-old Northwestern sophomore and Illinois Amateur champion, battled her way into finals, made good use of accurate short game to fight off last-ditch challenge by Arizona's Judy Bell to win 2-up for women's national collegiate golf title at Champaign.
