MILEPOST—DIED: BOB CORTNER, 32, quiet, dark-haired Redlands, Calif. veteran of midget car tracks, who was taking his first whirl at big-car racing; of head injuries suffered when his car got caught up in gusty wind, spun and hit concrete retaining wall head-on during practice run, at Indianapolis. Cortner's death was second this year, 50th in 50 years at Brickyard.
