A roundup of the sports information of the week
SWIMMING—U.S. and world records tumbled like clay pigeons in a shooting gallery as male swimmers splashed merrily in AAU championships at Los Altos, Calif. Indianapolis AC'S Frank McKinney, who tuned up with American record of 1:03.6 for 100-meter backstroke, windmilled 200 meters in 2:17.9 for world mark. Teammate Mike Troy hauled down still another world standard, bustling 200-meter butterfly in 2:16.4. (For other winners, see FOR THE RECORD.)
BOXING—Using the ropes as his ally, Mexico's tough José Becerra, a 117½-pound bruiser with hard fists, caught up to Bantamweight Champion Alphonse Halimi in eighth round, crashed him to canvas (see below) twice with vicious combinations to win title. Some 15,000 customers paid $151,151 to watch ferret-size warriors wage battle of attrition in Los Angeles' new $6 million Memorial Sports Arena (see page 48). Shrugged Halimi sheepishly: "He surprised me. I thought I could knock him out—but poof!"
Nineteen-year-old Dennis Moyer, a boy on a man's errand, side-stepped, swayed and back-stepped, but every time he looked crowding Welterweight Champion Don Jordan was there, uppercutting, hooking and banging away until his championship was safe in 15-rounder at Portland, Ore.
HORSE RACING—Hardly perturbed when he found himself boxed heading into the stretch, Clarence W. Smith's doughty Hillsdale got the message from Jockey Tommy Barrow, set out to Catch front-running Find and Terrang in $162,100 Hollywood Gold Cup. Hillsdale burst past Terrang, finally nailed gallant old Find 30 yards from home to win his biggest prize, a cool $100,000.
Exuberant Manuel Ycaza, who may yet become the richest caballero in all of Panama, earned another lush payday when he booted, whipped and shouted King Ranch's brown 3-year-old filly Resaca up on outside to run down favored Silver Spoon in $47,657 Delaware Oaks (see page 50).
BASKETBALI—Johnny Castellani, brassy young (32) coach who parlayed Elgin Baylor's ability into 49-9 record in two seasons at Seattle but resigned when NCAA cracked down on Chiefs for recruiting violations, will join up with his former meal ticket as coach of Minneapolis Lakers. Castellani was surprise choice to succeed Johnny Kundla, who moved on to Minnesota.
