It was Rose's second mount since he resumed riding after serving four years in the U.S. Air Force. He had ridden 228 winners previously.

DIED: WALT INGRAM, bantamweight boxer from Houston, after a two-hour emergency operation for hemorrhage sustained in a 9-round TKO loss to World Champion Jose Becerra in Guadalajara, Mexico.
