A Countess Sets the Pace
Under bright lights, over a fast track and before 40,000 fans at New York's Roosevelt Raceway, a new pacing star, Countess Adios, scoots away with the prize in the richest harness race (purse $142,786) ever contested. Leading from the half-mile pole, the Countess fought off the challenge of the nine colts in the field as she won the fifth Messenger Stake and first-place money of $71,393.08. She crossed the finish line a winner by a length and a quarter as her trainer-driver, Del Miller, gave a whoop of victory (see page 61).
