COTTON BOWL
DUKE
Coach Bill Murray's Blue Devils can run (they averaged nearly four yards a carry this season) and, for once, they can pass (they led the country with a completion record of 61%). In all respects, they will be more exciting than recent Duke bowl teams. But if they are to succeed, Tee Moorman, the No. 1 swing end who made 46 catches this year, will have to evade the blanket defense Arkansas' fast secondary will try to throw over him. Quarterbacks Don Altman and Walt Rappold may have to try long passes to loosen the defense, and Moorman helps out by shifting from side to side, thus setting up tackle-eligible plays. With Halfback Mark Leggett, the Blue Devils are especially dangerous on runbacks. But if Joel Arrington, the team's leading rusher, is still disabled, the running will suffer, and Duke may be forced to rely on its defense, built around Tackle Dwight Bumgarner and Guard Art Browning. Duke's defenders, however, will be challenged by an Arkansas offense that has both speed and power.
ARKANSAS
Above everything else, Arkansas is a team. There are individual stars—swift Halfback Lance Alworth, Quarterbacks George McKinney and Billy Moore and, if he is well, Fullback Joe Paul Alberty—but on offense or defense the finely drilled Razorbacks execute their orders with a precision that is a joy to watch. Coach Frank Broyles' running strategy calls for wide sweeps, jabs up the middle and occasional attempts to spring Alworth for a long gainer. His club will play position ball, rarely passing inside its own 40. Alworth is the prime target on long tosses, End Jimmy Collier is the best at catches up the middle and in the flats. The Razorbacks' defensive corps, which epitomizes the team with its lightness and mobility, boasts an exceptional roving linebacker in Wayne Harris. Arkansas sometimes concedes short passes but is hard to fool on long ones. This is an excellent second-half squad with a knack for forcing costly errors, and it should easily win its second straight bowl game under Broyles.
