Eddie Ford Jr., 7-year-old son of Yankee Pitcher Whitey, skating for Flushing Meadow (N.Y.) SC, flashed off the mark as three rivals fell, finished well in front to win Cub division of 37th annual Silver Skates ice event, at Madison Square Garden.

Johnny Loftus, top jockey from 1909 to 1919, was selected as 16th member of Pimlico's National Jockeys Hall of Fame. Loftus, one of three men who rode Man o' War, was first to win Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont on one horse (Sir Barton, in 1919).

Kathy Chabot, petite high school senior from San Diego, unseeded in tournament and ranked 16 in nation, won first major title by beating top-seeded, sixth-ranked Karen Hantze 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in national hardcourts, at La Jolla, Calif.

Floyd Harris, onetime wrestler at U. of Minnesota and now a student at St. Cloud State, raced in variety of outboard classes across nation, piled up 38,930 points to win James Mulroy trophy as National Outboard Assn.'s professional driver of year.

Ernie Koy Jr., 204-pound bullish halfback for Bellville (Texas) U.S. and son of former National League outfielder, scored 170 points, gained 2,306 yards on 232 carries, punted for 41-yard average, was named the state's most valuable high school player.

Kenneth Baily, 49-year-old civil servant of Bournemouth, England who has been running for record since age of 8, logged mile No. 124,511 (five times around equator) in his notebook, said cautiously: "I don't expect anybody will do it again in my lifetime."
