FACES IN THE CROWD

Manuel Dos Santos of Brazil set world record by swimming the 100-meter freestyle in 53.6 seconds at Rio de Janeiro. Dos Santos bettered the unofficial mark of 54.4 made by Steve Clark of the U.S. in the AAU championships at Los Angeles in August.

Mrs. Theodore Hawes of Summit, N.J. won U.S. Senior Women's golf title with 36-hole total of 159 at Westchester CC in Rye, N.Y. Mrs. Hawes, runner-up in the tournament from 1957 through 1959, beat Mrs. Edwin Vare Jr. of Bryn Mawr, Pa., by one stroke.

Pete Clagett, 17, of Kansas City, Mo. won both the Western Missouri Open duck-calling and goose-calling titles at Raytown, Mo. Contestants used wooden calls (somewhat resembling wooden whistles) while a panel of judges evaluated the quality of the tone.

Dutch Elbers, 29, of St. Paul, Minn., who has been pitching soft-ball a good 15 years, completed his best season with 46-4 record. In the World Tournament at Clearwater, Fla., Elbers won three games but lost two, both 1-0, when team allowed unearned runs.

William Leven-Sellor, 71, of Bower-bank, Me., retired mechanic who says he has been fishing since he was 4, won the $5,000 first prize in Ted Williams New England fishing tournament. Leven-sellor caught 23-pound 2-ounce lake trout in Schoodic Lake, Me.

Fred Putnam, 18, of Houlton, Me., who scored hole in one with a seven-iron on the 150-yard third at Houlton Community Golf Club, became the first man to do so since his great-uncle accomplished the feat on the same hole exactly 33 years ago.
