Dick Hanson, 17-year-old Eau Claire, Wis. senior quarterback, scored 72 of his team's 98 points, including three touchdowns in final game against Chippewa Falls, led his school to first unbeaten mark since 1933, when Dick's dad, Artie, scored 66 points.
Albert Spencer, chief of police in Tuckahoe, N.Y., won the annual Westchester hole-in-one tournament at the Wykagyl Country Club when he drove a nine-iron shot to within four inches of the cup on a 138-yard downhill hole and defeated a record field of 562.
Mary Stewart, 16, tiny (102 pounds) Vancouver, B.C. HS student, a finalist in the 1960 Olympic 100-meter freestyle, swam 110-yard butterfly in 1:09, beating record time of 1:10.8 held by Australian Dawn Fraser, won Canada's female athlete of the year award.
Robert Wright, 31, an advertising man from Victoria, B.C., competing in tournament at Vancouver, turned in the largest catches in six categories (spring, tyee and coho salmon, smallmouth bass, rainbow and lake trout), was named the Compleat Angler.
Ned Jarrett, 29-year-old Conover, N.C. grain dealer, won the NASCAR Grand National point title by placing in the top five finishers in 23 of his 46 races, earned $27,285 in prize money with only a single win, an easy victory in Birmingham, early in June.
Bill Mihalo, a milkman from Studio City, Calif., a walker since 1931, won the National Professional 25-mile Championships in the time of 3:32.01, now hopes for an L.A. to New York walk. Says 44-year-old Mihalo: "All I need now is a sponsor. I'm in shape."
