FACES IN THE CROWD

Ted Stickles, 19, Indiana U. sophomore, world record holder in the 400-meter medley, became the first swimmer to break two minutes in the 200-yard individual medley when he posted a 1:59.5 against Michigan State, breaking both the NCAA and American listed marks.

Benito Artinano, 19, from Balboa, Spain, a 5-foot-5, 125-pound soccer forward at North Carolina State, scored 17 of his team's total of 20 goals for the season, with a single-game high of six against South Carolina. Said his coach: "He is a little mouse among elephants."

Helene Madison, who won three gold medals in swimming at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles with victories in the 100 meters, 400 meters and 400-meter relay, filed for a seat on Seattle's City Council. "Many things could be better in Seattle," she says.

John Balfanz, truck driver from Minneapolis, leaped to a new North American ski-jumping distance mark of 317 feet at Westby, Wis. during the 39th annual Snowflake Ski Club meeting, thereby captured the No. 1 spot on the U.S. four-man ski-jumping team.

Joseph Bessel, 31, of Freeport, N.Y., a schoolteacher representing the New York Athletic Club, won the Metropolitan AAU eight-mile road run in the Bronx with a time of 43 minutes 38 seconds, beat the old course record by 13 seconds for the two-lap course.

Bill Bragg of Gardena, Calif., who first won the title in 1959, regained the Diamond Head Surfboard Paddling championship, covered the six miles off Waikiki, Hawaii in 52 minutes 59 seconds, beat Joe Napoleon, the 1960 champion in Class A Open Division.
