FACES IN THE CROWD

Barry Needham, 18, right-handed senior on Randolph (Mass.) High School baseball team, pitched four no-hitters in a row, striking out 64 bemused batters and giving his bored outfield lots of time for just plain musing. Not one ball went beyond the infield.

Bob Waterbury, one of five Long Island Sound men skippering International One Design sloops in Bermuda's Race Week, out-raced Warren Brown, Bermuda IOD champion, by 47 seconds on last leg of a three-race series to win the King Edward VII Gold Cup.

Robert J. Kelleher, 49, Beverly Hills lawyer who is the new captain of U.S. Davis Cup team, set his squad a winning example. With help from partner Elbert Lewis, he won the southern California senior men's doubles title in Los Angeles in straight sets.

Eileen Rahlens, a senior at Brooklyn College who lost only one college match in three years, pressed top-seeded Kathy Gagel of Briarcliff with strong play at the net to win the Middle States intercollegiate tennis final at Bryn Mawr and her third college trophy.

Al Lopez Jr., the son of the Chicago White Sox manager, is following in his father's spiked footsteps. The center fielder for the University of Florida baseball team, champions of their division, hit .310 in 33 games, scored 30 runs, drove in 13 and stole 20 bases.

Frank Chiodi, a construction worker in Bridgeport, Conn., who had to stop bowling for a year because of a heel injury, entered the national duckpin championships and won the men's singles title with a 450 total for three games, six pins ahead of runner-up Don Norton.
