FACES IN THE CROWD

Billy Spencer, 12, of Sarasota, Fla. soared to a new national junior boys' water-ski jump record of 83 feet in the Jacksonville Open Jump Classics. The son of a water-ski-school operator, Billy gets his distance by hitting the five-foot ramp at a flashy 40 mph.

Darlene Anderson, a sophomore at the University of Minnesota, won the Midwest collegiate women's golf championship by stroking a fine 162 in the 36-hole final. A former beauty queen, Miss Anderson has also held the state public links title for women.

Steve McQueen, man with a fast draw as television's bounty hunter, turns out to have a lead foot in real life. He sped over the 39-mile Santa Barbara road race at an average of 74.8 mph, winning the Formula Junior division in his Cooper BMC with an elapsed time of 30:04.

Dave Deubner, high school senior from Eugene, Ore., has already outdistanced his home state's whiz, Dyrol Burleson, by breaking Burleson's own school records. In one meet Deubner blazed new district marks in the mile (4:12.9) and 880 (1:55.8).

Marty Riessen, 19, tall and lithe Davis Cup player, breezed through the season unbeaten at Northwestern, where his father is the tennis coach. Riessen, a sophomore and basketball letterman, has not lost a set in college, leading his team to the Big Ten tennis title.

Adele Goddard of Miami, who made her most important chess move six year sago when she asked her husband to teach her the game, pleased him and surprised the field by winning the women's national amateur championship in Asbury Park, N.J.
