Alvin Odom Jr., 24, of Beaumont. Texas led throughout the National Left-handers golf tournament at the Golf-crest Country Club in Houston, to take the title with a four-under-par 276 for 72 holes. Odom intends to turn pro after a six-month hitch with the Army.
Jackie Cooper of St. Xavier's H.S., Louisville swept his top-seeded teammate, Mickey Schad, off the court to win the USLTA Inter-scholastic championships in Williamstown, Mass. Jackie and Mickey earlier took the doubles title for the second year in a row.
Sharon Finneran, 16, clipped more than 10 Seconds off the U.S. 800-meter mark with a time of 10:13.7 in the Southern Pacific AAU swimming meet in Los Angeles. Sharon recently smashed the U.S. 1,500-meter and world 400-meter individual medley records.
Dr. Britton Chance, 47, of Philadelphia won the world championship for 5.5-meter class sailboats in England. Dr. Chance, a 1952 Olympic gold medal winner, used a unique port tack that helped to bring him from eighth to second position in the last race to clinch first place.
Fritz Fisher, 20, pitched a two-hitter as Michigan beat Japan's Hosei University and won the intercollegiate world series in Honolulu. Fisher, a lanky lefty, hurled a series total of 18 innings, struck out 22 and gave up seven hits to be voted Most Valuable Player.
Dr. J. Gordon Bateman of Long Beach, Calif., fishing for white sea bass, pulled a switch in color and catch and landed a world-record 337-pound black sea bass near Catalina Island. Bateman used 27-pound test line to surpass the established record by 15 pounds.
