FACES IN THE CROWD

Doug Harford, stocky halfback for Piper City, Ill. high school, ran for five touchdowns in his final game to bring his season total to 222 points. Playing in only nine games, Harford gained 2,355 yards, and averaged more than 14 yards per carry.

Anne Coggins, a recent Sweet Briar College graduate who trains her own hunters, rode one, Black Mike, in the six-furlong Rose Tree Hunt race in Media, Pa. and beat seven other starters to win the Ladies' Plate, her first victory there after three years of trying.

Mike Wallace, 21, a Fullerton, Calif. college student, felt the champagne flow after his victory in California's Salton City 500-mile race. Driving a custom-built craft powered by a 406-cubic-inch Ford engine, Wallace beat a field of 73 other boats.

Jim Garrett, voluble football coach of Susquehanna University (Pa.), relied upon a rugged defense to guide the team to a nine-game undefeated season. Tiny Susquehanna (925 students) now has gone 22 straight games without a loss—the best mark in the country.

Don Cherry, velvet-voiced nightclub singer and amateur golfer with Walker Cup experience, turned pro and collected $216.66 in his first try, the pro-am before the Cajun Classic. A week later he shot a fine first-nine 31 at Mobile, but finished out of the money.

Frank Carissimi, a Wayne State (Mich.) sophomore, splashed through ankle-deep mud to win his 14th straight four-mile collegiate cross-country race, despite taking two wrong turns that added an extra half-mile to the Cleveland Heights course.
