FACES IN THE CROWD
Phil Hurt, a 6-foot-3 Rollins College sophomore, scored 20 points to lead his team to an 88-66 triumph over Georgia State College, in Winter Park, Fla. It was the Tars' first victory in 35 games and ended their claim to basketball's longest college losing streak.
Billie Domingue, 17, of Port Arthur, Texas defeated 11 women to capture her second straight world duck-calling championship, in Stuttgart, Ark. She learned the sport from her parents eight years ago, because "if you live with it you have to do it yourself."
Pam Swart of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Michigan, won the 200-yard freestyle in a meet record 2:09.1 and the 100 in 58.6 to lead the Wolverines to first place in the Women's Intercollegiate Championships at Michigan State.
Danny Sachs, 24, a former tailback at Princeton and now a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University, earned his Rugby Blue by playing in the annual match against Cambridge. His passing was good but not enough to overcome the Cambridge team, which won 14-0.
Ellen Griffin, a professor of physical education and golf instructor at the Women's College of the University of North Carolina for 22 years and author of a golf teaching manual, was named Teaching Pro of the Year by the Ladies Professional Golf Association.
Ed Cooper, 24, a Seattle mountain climber and photographer, led a three-man team up the previously unconquered 3,604-foot southwest face of EI Capitan in Yosemite National Park. The week-long ascent ranks with the most difficult ever accomplished in the U.S.
