WAY OUT OUT WEST: NEW DESIGNS FOR THE SEA...

Rudi Gernreich, a California sun-wear specialist who sees flesh as a basic ingredient in swimsuit design, has vastly increased the amount of themselves that American women care to bare at the beach. He has turned the dancer's leotard into a swimsuit that frees the body. In the process, he has ripped out the boning and wiring that made American swimsuits seagoing corsets. For the work of a daring designer of another kind, see page 73

Tiny splashes of knit wool—and large areas of bare skin—make up this Gernreioh bikini. On the following pages are some more of his fresh concepts in swimsuits

Girls who wear Gennreichs hide in a shiny vinyl shell or seek the freedom of the barest bikini. Rudi believes that American women will soon wear suits without tops

...AND FOR THE MOUNTAINS

"I felt a positive statement was necessary in this landscape," says Architect Victor Lundy of his ski center, opening in the Lincoln National Forest at Sierra Blanca, New Mexico-The statement turned out to be so positive he had to go all the way to Washington for approval. The shingled roof cones (below), reflected on adjoining terrace, are of native materials, but Lundy's use of them is far removed from the usual Forest Service ski shack

Upward-sweeping timbers give the center's restaurant a spacious but warm interior. Design is not only dramatic but practical: curved beams and roof are shaped to withstand the snow loads and winter winds
