Hey, They Went Thisaway

The contrary lad pictured here is not just a trackman with a heady touch of spring fever. He is a legitimate competitor at the Arkansas Relays in Fayetteville, and he has just skimmed over a 120-yard stretch of high hurdles in a zany spring track fixture called the shuttle hurdles. In the shuttle, teammates stand at opposite ends of the course. At the gun, the first man runs down the track to tap his teammate who then races back up—and so on. Here the man in the lane nearest the camera has just tapped his University of Arkansas teammate in the second lane. Meanwhile the third man waits for his Kansas State teammate to hurry down and spring him off the block.
