FACES IN THE CROWD

Linda Fitzpatrick, 11, of Newmarket showed that girls can play boys' games even in staid England. Playing center forward against all-male rivals on her primary school's football (soccer) team, she scored two goals to pace her team to the district championship.

Jeffrey Kreger, 18, who has won every major U.S. and Canadian single-scull schoolboy title, stroked to a third straight U.S. championship. A senior at a Michigan high school, he is a member of the National Honor Society and a four-sport letterman.

Francis J. Foley Jr., a senior at Clark University in Worcester, Mass., proved an able baseball captain by batting .355 and playing center field with a .990 fielding percentage. Despite the fact that he has only one arm, Foley also played varsity basketball.

George Taylor, 13, who has been winning tennis matches since he was 6, captured the 16-and 18-year-old divisions of the Houston tournament, defeating the state high school champion on the way, then went back to his last week of eighth grade.

Rev. Arnold Pope, 30, pastor of the Win-stead Methodist Church in Wilson, N.C., won nine straight Carolinas' AAU heavyweight weight-lifting titles. Recently after winning a contest in Winston-Salem he had to drive all night to reach the pulpit on time.

Michael Sharik III, A.B., 34, coxswain of the tanker Esso Baltimore's lifeboat racing crew, handled the 1,680-pound craft's tiller with ease while guiding his eight oarsmen to victory for the second straight year in the International Lifeboat Race in New York Harbor.
