FACES IN THE CROWD
Beth McAleer, 17, of Mamaroneck, N.Y. and the Horseshow Harbor Yacht Club, competing in her second Long Island Sound Girls' championship, had a steady tiller hand as she guided her Lightning to four firsts and a third to win the title over 17 other skippers.
Ronnye Sewalt, of Chico, Texas, who learned to rope calves from his dad, Royce, 1946 world champion, proved an adept pupil as he defeated 116 ropers to win the event at the Cheyenne rodeo. Ronnye's win, worth $3,610, placed him third in the U.S. standings.
Mrs. Lorraine Painter, a mother of four from Cameron, Mo., was chosen to represent the U.S. at the Invitational Tournament of the Americas. She justified her selection by rolling a nine-game total of 1,644 to win the women's title by 127 pins.
Ed Overton, of Fairhope, Ala., who has been winning regattas for 57 years, skippered his Lightning, Mauvilian, to an eighth Southern District championship to add another trophy to the shelf. "Sailing is good for keeping healthy," he says, and at 73 he should know.
Mrs. Bette Toothaker, a Clarkston, Wash. housewife, using a combination of fast and slow spins, reverse and braking techniques, dumped three-time champion Mrs. Virginia Mitchem two falls out of three to win the women's birling (logrolling) title.
James Osborne, 18, of Honolulu, seeded third in the International Junior Chamber of Commerce tennis tournament in Provo, Utah, dropped only one set en route to winning the singles championship and then teamed with his younger brothel Gerald to sweep the doubles.
