Anne Batterson, of Bloomfield, Conn., who took up sky-diving three years ago, won the women's overall title at the National Parachute Championships and qualified for the U.S. team that will compete at the world tournament in West Germany next July.
Dick Mann, of Pinole, Calif., who has been racing motorcycles for 12 years and has ranked among the top 10 U.S. cyclists since 1957, finally became the Grand National Champion. He won the 50-lap T.T. race in Gardena, Calif, to boost his total to an unbeatable 114 points.
Andras Balczo, a 25-year-old Hungarian, ended Russia's domination of the world modern pentathlon championships when his win in the 4,000-meter crosscountry run (the last of five events) gave him the individual title and paced Hungary to the team championship.
Don Buford, 26, a switch-hitting third baseman for pennant-winning Indianapolis (White Sox), was named the International League rookie of the year. The former USC halfback, in his third year of pro ball, led the league in batting (.336) and stolen bases (42).
Mrs. Charles Bartholomew, 60, of Brookline, Mass., who has been playing golf for 26 years, was five strokes behind after 18 holes but came back to win herfirst U.S. Senior Women's Golf Association championship by four strokes with a 16-over-par 160.
Kendall Mellor, a 27-year-old Yorkshire, England bookbinder, was blown 11 miles off course while attempting his first English Channel crossing, but after some 17 hours and 35 miles he stumbled ashore at Kent, completing one of the longest Channel swims ever.
