FACES IN THE CROWD

Althea Roger-Smith, of Bransford Court, near Worcester, England, almost lost out when her mount knocked down a pole on the next-to-last fence in the Horse of the Year Show's foxhunter championship at Wembley, but her fast time gave her the blue ribbon.

Jim Baird, of Oakland, Calif., splashed ahead of 70 other starters to win the San Francisco Dolphin Club's Golden Gate swim. The Cal senior covered the 7/8-mile choppy course under the bridge in 20:28, beating Jim Small, last year's winner, by 18 seconds.

Joe Foster, 67, of Omaha, who began pitching horseshoes 32 years ago on his doctor's advice (he had a cough caused by working in a flour mill), won his 14th Omaha-Council Bluffs Horseshoe Tournament. "I feel better today than I did at 35," he claims.

Mike Nixon, 18, a 6-foot, 190-pound senior halfback for St. Mary's High School in Clinton, Iowa, scored six touchdowns (one on an 85-yard run) and rushed for a total 356 yards, to lead his team to a 47-25 victory over Riverdale High of Port Byron, Ill.

Mrs. Evelyn Jones defeated 1963 World Overall Champion Marvin Hambrick in the 410-gauge event at the Pan-American International Skeet Championships in Dallas. She also earned the ladies' overall title by defeating this year's ladies' world champion.

Bob Binetti, 19, a student at Somerset Tech in Raritan, N.J., rolled off with the National Intercollegiate Sprint Bicycle Championship in Flushing, N.Y. on the new Kissena Park banked track—where he also will try out for the 1964 Olympic team next spring.
