FACES IN THE CROWD

Harlow Daly, 80, a retired accountant living in Sanford, Me., who took up chess in 1900 when he was 17 and has been the Maine state champion for the past five years, won his third straight Portland city title with a perfect 6-0 score (six wins, no draws, no losses).

Norm Houck, a Winnipeg (Man.) schoolteacher, skipped his curling team to an upset win in Canada's Tournament of Champions bonspiel in Toronto. The Houck Rink compiled a 6-1 record and beat Hector Gervais' Edmonton team 12-5 in the final round.

Chester Barnes, 16, of London, who took up table tennis at 13 and quit school at 15 to play it full time (he earns money from exhibitions and endorsements), was ranked No. 1 in England, after winning the English Closed Championships for two years in a row.

Eligio Del Guercio, a farmer from Landrum, S.C., caught (and released) four sailfish to win the Invitational Masters Angling Tournament in Palm Beach, Fla. His prizes were the Ernest Hemingway "Old Man and the Sea" trophy, plus the Masters fishing jacket.

Carole Granato, 20, a sophomore at San Fernando Valley State College in Northridge, Calif. who started speed skating just two winters ago, won both the 440-yard and mile events for women at the Northern California Championships (indoor) in Berkeley, Calif.

Gary Prestesater, a 6-foot 1-inch sophomore guard on the Azusa (Calif.) College basketball team, scored 62 points (on 25 field goals and 12 free throws) in leading his school to a 128-72 victory over Western Baptist Bible College of El Cerrito, Calif.
