Eduardo Zuleta, 28, of Ecuador upset top-seeded Thomas Koch of Brazil in the semifinals of the Austin Smith tennis championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and went on to defeat Gardnar Mulloy, the tournament's nine-time champion, in five sets for the singles title.

Doug Wininger, a senior guard for the Warren Central High basketball team in Indianapolis, made 51 consecutive free throws over a five-game span, surpassing the NCAA record of 44 held by Tom Boyer and falling only four short of Bill Sharman's NBA mark.

Carrie Patch, 23, a willowy, blue-eyed executive secretary in a St. Paul bank who graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota (she majored in speech) and enjoys bowling and swimming, was elected Queen of the Snows for the St. Paul Winter Carnival.

James (Ding) Schoonmaker, 30, of Miami Beach, who won the Finn class midwinter championship two weeks earlier on Biscayne Bay, skippered his Star class sloop Dingo to victory in the Bacardi Cup series, an event he had won once before—in 1953, at 19.

Les Reisberg, 56, a vice president of a Minneapolis plumbing supplies firm, bowled the second 300 game of his career—a quarter-century after his original feat. "The first 11 balls were no problem, but I was just as nervous on the 12th as I was in 1939," he said.

Ron Laird, 25, of Pomona, Calif. set five U.S. walking records in a San Diego track meet when he bettered Ron Zinn's 1963 marks in the 15 and 20 kms. and en route broke long-established records for the eight- (1918), nine- (1880) and 10-mile (1880) distances.
