The Price of a Pedigree

Ill-bred, ill-kempt and happy as a lark, a mongrel mutt (left) watched in wonder from a tenement fire escape last week as the most carefully supervised canines in the land arrived at New York's Madison Square Garden to compete for prizes at the 88th annual Westminster dog show. There were representatives of 116 varieties in all, including an Afghan (right) who wore his ears in a snood to keep them clean. But the favorite with the fans if not the judge (who gave top prize to a whippet) was a 3½-pound Maltese {above). He won the Toy Group and plainly wanted more than anything to please pretty 16-year-old Anna Marie Stimmler, who both owned and showed him.
