FACES IN THE CROWD

Mike Jacobson, senior co-captain of the Penn State gymnastic team, won the all-round title at the eastern intercollegiate championships in University Park, Pa. with the best score in six Olympic events, then took first in the horizontal bar and parallel bars.

Karen Rideout, 19, a bowler for six years and the only girl on her team in the King Louie Stars junior bowling league in Kansas City, Mo., rolled consecutive games of 211, 250 and 269 for a 730 series—highest scratch score ever recorded by a junior girl.

Mark Smith, 15, a St. Petersburg (Fla.) high school sophomore who had never skippered a Flying Dutchman sailboat before, borrowed one from a friend and maneuvered it to victory over 22 other boats in the Clyde Trophy Junior Invitational Regatta on Tampa Bay.

Claudia Reeder, 19, a University of Kansas sophomore who has been fencing just one year, was sanctioned by the Amateur Fencers League of America to compete as the only U.S. girl at the world junior championships in Budapest, Hungary later this month.

Rebel Ryan, 18, of Rutland, Vt., who has been skiing since he was 10, turned the Eastern Junior Alpine championships into a one-man show at Sugarloaf Mountain in Kingfield, Me. when he won the downhill, the slalom and the giant slalom on consecutive days.

Len Boyer, 18, a left-hand-hitting shortstop who hopes to follow his older brothers—Cloyd, Ken and Clete—into the major leagues someday, set a Little Eight Conference basketball record when he scored 39 points in a tournament game for his Alba (Mo.) High School team.
