Dave Kelly, 20, of Toronto, goalie for the Portland (Ore.) Buckaroos in the Western Hockey League, broke a league record when he held opponents scoreless for 235 minutes (including three straight shutouts), was named WHL Rookie of the Year.

Charles Hoey, 19, a math and German major at Marietta (Ohio) College who runs one mile a day to keep himself mentally alert, was the only contestant among 50 chess players to defeat U.S. Champion Bobby Fischer in a 4½-hour Pittsburgh exhibition match.

John Lyman, 36, a Guilford, N.H. landscape contractor, who learned the subtleties of sled dog racing from his father, a Laconia (N.H.) barber who competed with huskies in the '30s, guided a team of Irish setters to victory in the Maine championships.

Joan Crawford, an agile forward-guard at Nashville Business College, led her school to the women's national AAU basketball title with 22 points and 13 rebounds in the championship game in St. Joseph, Mo., and was voted the tournament's most valuable player.

Don Buzzard Jr., 18, a senior at Hast Waterloo (Iowa) High, the state 165-pound wrestling champion last year, breezed through an unbeaten season (10-0) in the 180-pound division and gained the state championship with victories in three straight matches.

Lones Wigger, 26, an All-America collegiate rifle champion at Montana State in 1960, now a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., won the National Mid-Winter small bore (.22 caliber) rifle championship in St. Petersburg, Fla.
