Shena Thomson, 11, of East Norwalk, Conn., who has practiced gymnastics for less than two years, won the all-round title over 49 other girls in her first formal competition—the New England Area YMCA Junior Gymnastics Championships in Holyoke, Mass.
Art Quinn JR., 21, of San Rafael, Calif., a senior philosophy major at San Francisco University and a first baseman who leads his team with a .438 average, had two singles and a double, batted in two runs and scored twice in a 7-4 win over St. Mary's College.
Billy Hardin, 21, a Louisiana State senior and the son of Glenn Hardin, three-time U.S. 400-meter hurdles champion and 1936 Olympic gold medalist, followed in his father's footsteps as he took the 440-yard hurdles in a fast 50.8 at the Texas Relays in Austin.
Mel Miller, 16, who lives on a Fairview, Mont. ranch and has boxed since he was 12, won 10 fights in five weeks to gain three AAU championships: the Montana State in Butte, the National Junior in Helena, Mont. and the National Senior in Las Vegas.
Eddie Swain, 12, an eighth-grader who plays guard in the Chester (Pa.) Central Biddy Basketball League, scored 26 points in leading his team to a 61-55 victory over Jersey City for the International Championship, and was named Mr. Biddy Basketball of 1964.
Margaret Tillberry, a Springfield, Ohio grandmother, won the women's title at the Ben Pearson indoor archery open in Detroit for the third time with a ladies' tournament record of 1,650 for 32 ends. Only nine men in the field of 942 archers bettered her score.
