FACES IN THE CROWD

Sue Gillespie, 17, a winsome, blue-eyed blonde from Portland, Ind. who started pitching horseshoes three years ago, won her second world championship in Greenville, Ohio. She also set a world record for one game by pitching 56 ringers out of 60.

Marc Belich, 15, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound ninth grader from West Allis, Wis., pitched the first perfect game in the history of the VFW Teener Baseball Meet when he defeated Pierre, S. Dak. in Hershey, Pa. He then won the next game by hitting a grand slam home run.

Chip Kell, 15, a husky (6 feet 1 inch, 225 pounds) center on the Murphy High (Atlanta) football team who drinks 30 gallons of milk a month, put the 12-pound shot 59 feet 1 inch to set an age-group record at the Jaycee Junior Championships in St. Paul.

Dan Orlich, 39, of Reno, a former Green Bay Packer end, became the second marksman ever to hit 100 straight clay targets from the maximum 27 yards, at a trapshooting meet in Denver. His feat is comparable to hitting 60 home runs in a season.

Peggy Conley, a 17-year-old from Spokane who was runner-up last year in both the Junior Girls' and Women's Amateur golf championships, finally won a national title by routing Laura MacIvor, in the finals of the Girls' Junior Championship in Leavenworth, Kans.

Brian Gottfried, a 12-year-old from Cape Coral, Fla. who has been playing tennis seriously since he was 8, became the new 12-and-under national champion by defeating Randy Thomas of Imperial Beach, Calif. 11-9, 6-2 in the finals in Chattanooga.
