FACES IN THE CROWD

Arline Reid, 33, of Readfield, Me., a supermarket cashier and the mother of two, who took up shooting only a year ago, gained four of the six available trophies in a women's class of eight at the first annual approved gallery rifle tournament in Damariscotta, Me.

Marvin Selvy, 6-foot-4 senior forward on Corbin (Ky.) High's basketball team, ran up a total of 63 consecutive free throws that ended only when he broke his hand. In the last seven games he has averaged 19.2 points despite playing with his hand in a cast.

Wendy Berol, 16, and her chestnut mare, Orbit, won a double championship at the Sunnyfield Farm Horse Show in Bedford, N.Y.—the open-hunter title, with two firsts and a second for 13 points, and the junior-hunter title, with two more firsts and a third.

Frank Ruiz, 16, of Tucson, beat a 53-man field in the annual eight-mile cross-desert run from Pueblo High School to Mission San Xavier del Bac and set a record of 44:35. The event is a revival of a traditional race run by Indians from the Tucson area.

Mike Mickeriz, 17, of Rumford, Me., the schoolboy ski-jumping champion of Maine and New England, added the New York title to his string with jumps of 103 and 106 feet and a point total of 212.4, 17.8 more than his closest competitor in a field of 55 at Lake Placid, N.Y.

Leonard Thompson, 17, and his father, Cecil, of Laurinburg, N.C. won their second consecutive Donald J. Ross Jr. Father and Son Golf Tournament, held at the Pinehurst Country Club. They birdied four holes for a 34-34-68, four under par on Pinehurst's No. 1 course.
